Bird of the Month:

Sparrows

House Sparrows:house sparrow

  • The Old Testament Bible associates the symbol of the sparrow with loneliness and solitude, while the New Testament views it as a sign of insignificance. Poor House Sparrow.
  • In Japan the sparrow is traditionally a symbol of loyalty, perhaps because of its socialable nature and how it gets along in large numbers.
  • These birds return to their birthplace after every migration (a characteristic known as philopatric). Because of this, local populations have adapted to the color of their habitat resulting in 15 distinct subspecies in the West.
  • A group of house sparrows are collectively known as a "blight", "humiliation", and "subdivision" of sparrows.

Song Sparrows:song sparrow

  • The Song Sparrow lives up to its name, being one of the most persistent singers throughout the spring and summer.
  • Other birds such as mockingbirds are not able to effectively imitate their song.
  • They recognizes enemies by both instinctual and learned patterns, and adjusts future behavior based on both its own experiences in encounters, and from watching other birds interact with enemies.
  • A group of Song Sparrows are collectively known as a "flock", "choir", and "chorus" of sparrows.

White Crowned Sparrows:white crowned sparrow

  • The White-crowned Sparrow is one of the best-studied songbirds in North America. Much of our knowledge of bird song and development is based on studies of this species.
  • Four of the five subspecies are migratory. The sedentary race lives in a very narrow band along the California coast.
  • Because males learn the songs they grew up with and do not travel far from where they were raised, song dialects frequently form. Males on the edge of two dialects may be bilingual and able to sing both dialects.
  • A group of sparrows has many collective nouns, including a "crew", "flutter", "meinie", "quarrel", and "ubiquity" of sparrows.
